Okay, I admit it. I've not been very concerned about toxins as they relate to the ozone layer. I guess that in my mind, it just seemed so far from my control or so minute in my daily list of concerns while raising my family. Don't get me wrong, we do care about our planet and being responsible stewards of this wonderful earth. Before we had the perks of curbside pickup in our rural area, my family would load up our family car weekly and drive large amounts of plastics, glass, aluminum and paper to the area recycling center. We definitely tried to do our part of taking care of the planet, but every time someone mentioned the word “toxins”, I automatically brushed it off, as if it only pertained to that far, far away element, that seemed light years away from my day to day burdens, the ozone layer.
It's taken some time but I'm finally getting the bigger picture. Honestly, I wish that the ozone layer was our biggest problem! The unfortunate truth is that their effects are not far, far away but sadly here on a very up close and personal level. In fact, they may just be the cause of an unbelievable amount of our ever increasing physical illnesses, disease and emotional burdens. I won't be able to cover all that I'd like to share in this one article so this will be part 1 in the beginning of a series of articles titled “War on Toxins” in which we will be exploring their devastating impact on what is close to home - our families.
Did you know that we've been duped into thinking that the EPA & FDA can really protect us? When I think about how much trust we place into the assumption that if it's sold in the store, pharmacy or drive-through then it “must be safe, right?”...it's kinda scary. I admit that in this hectic world, the thought of being able to count on that does sound refreshing. Unfortunately, it's only our entire families' health that is at steak. Do we really feel safe blindly trusting the government to protect us from corporate greed? Forget political differences and conspiracy theories for a moment. Let's just logically consider the track record. They can't seem to manage much well, lately and there's simply not the funds available in the budget to keep up with all the products and chemicals being created and introduced every single day.
For example, since the early 1900's over 80,000 chemicals have been introduced into our society and only 550 have been tested for safety. Nope, that's not a typo. Out of 88,000 only 550 have been tested. That's not even close to good and should not be acceptable. Yet, according to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), about 2.5 billion pounds of toxic chemicals are released yearly by industrial facilities and 6 million pounds of mercury are poured into our air every year! Mercury is a neurotoxin by the way. Neurotoxins damage the brain and nervous system. Have we had an increase in memory problems, autism, ADHD and depression? Yet, we are allowing this toxin to infiltrate into our air, vaccines, dental fillings, etc.
One of the biggest problems with toxins, is that we can't see them bombarding us and with so many of them being odorless, often we aren't even aware of the moments that we are being poisoned. Some of you may have lived long enough, like myself, to remember the warning symbol of the skull and crossbones. It's long gone. That symbol represented death and that was bad for marketing. But without it there, how can we know which products are potentially dangerous? Are we really expected to read the fine print and actually know what those long and complicated chemical names, that we can't even pronounce, mean? I'm going to do my best to expose them along with their particular detriments and some easy healthy alternatives upcoming articles as well as in my classes that I teach for free.
When considering toxins at large, here is an alarming fact: According to the EPA, “Indoor air quality can be 5-100 times worse than the outdoor air quality.” That doesn't sound comforting, at all but consider the fact that at least this IS an area of our life where we can re-claim control. We can learn and make healthy choices to reverse those numbers. The choice is up to us.
What's making the indoor air quality so bad? Just for starters: dish washing detergent, laundry soap, hand soap, spray air fresheners, shampoos, perfumes, wall plugins, mattresses, foam pillows, carpet and pad, paint, varnishes, household cleaners, and even the chlorinated, fluoridated water that flowing from the tap. To make matters worse, many of these items are a double whammy because we're not only breathing them in but also have them touching our skin, literally bathing in them, creating an absorption factor too. Both ways they are entering the bloodstream, negatively effecting brain, nervous system, endocrine system and immune system, which inevitably ends in a form of illness.
With ALL the illnesses and chronic diseases that are increasing, at alarming and out of control rates, it's about time that we begin to see things for what they are. According to the World Health Organization (WHO) “It has been projected that, by 2020, chronic diseases will account for almost three-quarters of all deaths worldwide.” I know that may sound gloomy, but actually, it's good news because so many of these toxic items are things that we CAN replace and remove from our home to reclaim our clean, healthy air. Here's what the WHO has to say about it: “Chronic diseases are largely preventable diseases.”
Where to start? We can pull the plug on plugins, snuff out toxic candles, switch to natural alternatives, stop using toxic household cleaners and by all means please stop sticking you un-gloved hands/arms in the cleaning buckets. It's like we're playing Russian Roulette with our health every day. I know it gets tiresome, but we have to become vigilant toxin police in order to reclaim our health, wellness and prevent or reverse illness and disease.
I don't think we can afford to ignore this issue any longer and it's something I'm very passionate about because I believe toxins were a direct link to two of the autoimmune diseases that my family battled and won. I want to make it simple for you to de-code the mambo-jambo of the chemical world. Several of my upcoming articles will be a continuation of this topic, “War on Toxins”, plus I'll be continuing to teach free classes, uncovering toxins one by one. So be sure to check the front of the magazine to see when and where I'll be. You can also check my class schedule on my website: www.thehealthrevOILution.com for any updates or additions. This is information that I want everyone to know, so if I'm not teaching a class near you or on a day you can attend, then organize one and I'll come to you, no charge.
Since we are constantly washing our hands and hand sanitizing all day with toxic products, switching to toxin free hand soap and sanitizer is a great place to start. Look for my recipe at the very end of this article.
Essential oils are an all natural alternative to these toxic concoctions. My family uses them for all of our household and personal care products. Which is a really great value when you understand how essential oils work. They offer a double whammy in a good way because you're not only eliminating the toxins, but you're also simultaneously receiving the health benefits too. However, it's imperative though that you only use essential oils that are organic and have been tested for their purity and therapeutic value. My family only trusts Young Living brand and I am more than glad to send you a free sample so that your family can try them too. Simply email me at: thehealthrevOILution@gmail.com and let me know what you'd like to try and as long as I have the oil in stock I'll mail a sample to you, free of charge.
